Surrey (Newton) Tutors

Davie Chahal, Director of Education
Davie grew up loving school and loving learning. It was a natural decision to continue on to university when the time came. She went to Simon Fraser and earned her BA in History and then followed it with a Bachelor of Education from UNBC. While teaching in the classroom, Davie also worked at Sylvan Learning. It was at Sylvan that Davie learned of the amazing success stories of students who initially struggled but eventually overcame school challenges. She decided to have a career with Sylvan so she could play an integral role in shaping students for future success in school and in life.

Michelle Bancroft, Centre Director
Upon graduating from UBC in 1993 with her B.Ed, Michelle started working as a part-time teacher in the Surrey Sylvan Learning location. As a natural born teacher, students thrived under Michelle’s instruction. “I like working closely with the kids,” she says. “I found in the classroom I couldn’t connect with the students as much, so Sylvan gives me a greater sense of personal satisfaction.” With a strong background in math and sciences, Michelle worked with many of the older students, but she was equally adept at working with the elementary students. Her ability to communicate well with students and parents, contributed to Michelle’s promotion to Director of the Langley Centre in 1994. Over the years Michelle has worked in various locations and has recently returned to the Surrey location as Director where she is very dedicated to helping all students succeed.

Surrey (Fleetwood) Tutors

Vijay Dhanoa, Centre Director
If there is one person with a passion for learning it’s Vijay. This delightful Director considers herself “still in school” while working at Sylvan. Vijay has three advanced degrees; a Bachelor’s degree in Science, a Master’s degree in English and a Bachelor of Education. Vijay gains great satisfaction in being instrumental in setting and attaining personal goals. Successful and confident students are her reward.

Allison Simpson, Director of Education
Allison decided she wanted to become a teacher when she spent a summer working at the CNIB with children having visual impairments. She was inspired by their spirit and desire to learn under all circumstances. Allison has a BA in History and an Education degree from Vancouver Island University. She graduated in 2007 and joined the Sylvan team in Vancouver in 2008 as a teacher. She decided to pursue a career with Sylvan because it is instrumental in providing individual support for students while instilling in them a love for life-long learning. She joined the team in Fleetwood on July 22, 2010 and is a welcome addition to our Sylvan family.

South Surrey / White Rock Tutors

Melanie Bannister, Centre Director
With a teaching degree and strong background in math and sciences, Melanie could have worked anywhere in public education. She chose Sylvan. Melanie graduated from UBC in 1990 and was hired as a part-time instructor in 1992. She was soon promoted to Director in the Tsawwassen Centre and in the spring of 1996 she moved to the Richmond Centre. In August 2007, Melanie joined the team of directors at the Langley Centre, and is now stepping into the Director's position at the White Rock centre.

Michelle Knapton, Director of Education
Michelle received her Bachelor of Education in Learning Support from the University of Victoria. She taught on Vancouver Island before moving back to "the Mainland" last year. She enjoys being part of an educational team to help students become successful and confident learners. She states, "Sylvan has provided me with the opportunity to help make a difference in children's lives."
