Vancouver (Westside – Arbutus) Tutors

Jennie Lum, Centre Director
After obtaining degrees in English Language and Elementary Education from the University of British Columbia, Jennie started work as an instructor at Sylvan Learning in 1999. The part-time position became full-time as her responsibilities expanded to include overseeing the Academic Reading Program and testing. She participated in the Director of Education training in 2001, and received certification shortly thereafter. Jennie became the Centre Director of the Arbutus location in January 2010. Jennie values the opportunities that Sylvan provides to work closely with both students and parents to assist in gaining success in school.

Brenda Floyd, Director of Education
Brenda graduated from the University of Victoria with a Bachelor of Education degree; she majored in Math and Social Studies. She started her teaching career as a Teacher-on-Call for the Vancouver School Board, but decided to explore other careers in education. Brenda has been working at Sylvan for several years; first as an instructor and program manager, and now, as a Director of Education. Brenda became the Director of Education of the Champlain Square location in the spring of 2008 and transferred to the Arbutus location in January 2010. She enjoys working with both parents and students to create an individual plan that will help them achieve their goals.

Bonnie Wong, Director of Education
Bonnie’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree, with double majors in Psychology and Linguistics, and Grade 10 piano certification from the Royal Conservatory of Music. Since graduating from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Education degree in 2007, she has had several years of experience interacting with elementary aged students and their parents as a classroom teacher. Bonnie joined Sylvan Learning in 2008. While continuing her duties as a classroom and piano teacher, she also continued to teach at Sylvan because she was impressed with how students gained confidence and knowledge through their individualized programs. In the summer of 2011, Bonnie became a Director of Education at our Arbutus location.

Vancouver (Westside – Cambie) Tutors

Bob Dhudwal, Director of Education
After working as a Teacher-on-Call in Vancouver and Surrey, Bob joined Sylvan Learning in the summer of 2001. Initially, he worked as an instructor at the Arbutus location. Bob enjoyed providing a caring environment to help students improve their skills in reading, writing and math. He eventually assumed the responsibilities of administering skills assessments and managing students' programs. He received his Director of Education certification in the fall of 2009 and began working at the Champlain Square location. Bob transferred to the Cambie location in September 2010. Bob enjoys working closely with students and their families in order to ensure educational success.

Vancouver (Eastside – Champlain) Tutors

Roberta Richards, Centre Director
Roberta received her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of British Columbia. She taught for many years in the public school system in British Columbia and Ontario. She has been with Sylvan for the past 15 years – experiencing all aspects of Sylvan: Instructor, Director of Education and Centre Director. Roberta enjoys the positive atmosphere created for students at Sylvan Learning.

North and West Vancouver Tutors

Joyce Tang (North Vancouver)
Joyce has been the Centre Director of the North Vancouver location since October 1, 2010.  She was born in Hong Kong and raised in Vancouver. She is an avid reader with a passion for traveling. With an interest in history, she received a B.A. in History and a B. Ed. in Secondary Social Studies from UBC in 2005 and 2006. Upon graduation, Joyce began her career teaching at the North Vancouver Sylvan location and then was promoted to Director of Education and worked in Coquitlam and Richmond in that capacity.  As a Sylvan Director, she is committed to helping students reach their full potential and achieve success in life.

Leslie Mason (West Vancouver)
Leslie has been working with children for as long as she can remember.  She received her Bachelor of Arts (Geography) in 1994 and her B.Ed. from UBC in 2000 and taught in the North Van School District. She started with Sylvan working in North Vancouver in 2001 where she worked for six years as the Director of Education.  She took a hiatus from Sylvan to bring two wonderful boys into the world and is thrilled to be back as Centre Director in the West Vancouver centre.  Leslie enjoys working at Sylvan because she loves to see the students succeed. She has witnessed first-hand the transition of reluctant learners into proud, confident and capable students.
